It’s amazing how much things can change over eight years. When Microsoft unveiled the Xbox 360 back in 2005, the company owned the video game market along with Sony and Nintendo. Now, with its new console set to be unveiled Tuesday – reports suggest it could be called the Xbox Infinity – the landscape is dramatically different.

Mobile and social games have come out of nowhere to become a multibillion-dollar concern, luring both developers and resources away from the traditional business.

PC gaming has seen a revival, with digital distribution services such as Steam providing further competition.

Schoolchildren describe Oklahoma tornado terror

Schoolchildren and their teachers got a sudden lesson in survival after Monday’s deadly tornado levelled two schools in Oklahoma City and nearby Moore, Okla.

The twister brought winds as strong as 320 km/h down on the Briarwood and Plaza Towers elementary schools, leaving staff and students with about 16 minutes to find shelter.

Children driven around too much, Canadian report suggests

Fewer Canadian kids are commuting by walking or biking as a new report reveals a marked decline among young people using active modes of transportation.

Active Healthy Kids Canada released its annual Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth on Tuesday, assigning a “D” grade in the category of active transportation. A “D minus” grade was given for overall physical activity levels.

Children who use active transport for commutes to and from school can accumulate up to 45 additional minutes daily of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity compared to kids travelling by car, train or bus.

Duffy scandal has smeared entire Senate, Baker says

A Liberal Senator from central Newfoundland wants all expense claims from all MPs and Senators to be open to public scrutiny, in light of the widening scandal about Mike Duffy’s expenses.

George Baker said making such reports public would increase transparency and accountability, and help prevent transgressions.

“Everybody is in a position of trust, and if you’ve got nothing to worry about, why not open up the books?” said Baker, reacting to revelation about fellow Senator Mike Duffy, who was forced out of the Conservative caucus last week.

Horwath says NDP will support Ontario Liberal budget

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says the party will support the ruling Liberals’ budget, avoiding a spring election.

EI board appointees made banned donations to Conservatives

Dozens of people appointed to plum patronage jobs have been donating to the Conservative party, despite government rules that forbid it.

A Canadian Press investigation found as many as one of every five chairpersons on the Employment Insurance Boards of Referees gave money to political parties, riding associations and election candidates while they served on the tribunal.

All but one of the dozens of donations went to Conservatives, Election Canada records show. The lone non-Tory donation went to a Liberal riding association in the Toronto area.

Oklahoma tornado recovery work begins after deadly storm

Recovery efforts are underway this morning after a tornado packing 320 km/h winds flattened two elementary schools and many homes 16 kilometres south of Oklahoma City, leaving 24 people dead, including seven children.

President Barack Obama assured the country that Oklahoma would receive federal emergency aid to help with the recovery, and he reached out especially to those whose children were killed.

Departing U.S. ambassador to Canada hired as BMO vice-chair

U.S. Ambassador David Jacobson will become vice-chairman of BMO Financial Group, based out of Chicago, after he leaves his job in Canada later this year, the bank says.

Jacobson’s four-year tenure as ambassador ends July 15, and he will start his new job in October.

In his new post, Jacobson will be responsible for “building and reinforcing key customer relationships and business development,” and will report to BMO Financial Group’s chief operating officer, Bill Downe, BMO said in a release Tuesday.
